About
The Shop is a business designed to bring classes and activities to individuals interested in craft and trade skills. The Shop will present classes in arts and creative study, such as woodworking, knife making, leather working and carpentry, with the intent to expand into other areas of student interest. Classes will be offered at specified times and class length will range from the all day workshop to the semester long course.
Lucas Lance has a passion for creating with his hands and believes The Shop is an opportunity to teach and share his talents with children as well as adults. Lucas grew up in the shop environment. In 1981, his father, Bill Lance, started Lance Knives and Lucas began his knife making career learning in his father’s workshop. For Lucas, Alaska has provided countless opportunity for enriching his education with activities not found in the traditional class room. As an Alaskan resident since 1979, Lucas has gathered experience in many areas such as homesteading, hunting, fishing, trapping and woodcraft. These activities that Lucas holds dear are the very inspiration for The Shop. Through these activities, Lucas has found a desire to develop skills in leatherworking, woodworking and metalworking.
Many of the classes The Shop offers are in areas of great interest. However, it is hard for an individual or family to procure the space, tools, materials, and knowledge required to participate and become efficient within each field. The other aspect that makes The Shop advantageous is the ability to dabble in a craft where the student may have interest and wants to discover if there is just cause to purchase tools and materials.
“There is a sense of satisfaction matched by little else when, as an individual, you are able to create a product you can rely on to accomplish the task at hand. Whether this is a custom knife you use while enjoying the wilderness, a prized firearm you have constructed and shoot efficiently, or a sturdy cabin you have built with the knowledge learned by experience. “
